Consciousness Lab Ambient Sound Research (C.L.A.S.R.) is an ambient music collective founded during the mid 90s San Francisco Bay Area rave scene. For their first show (at Whole Life Expo in 1994) they created a soundtrack for a gathering of people celebrating a greater acceptance of spiritual ideas and cyberdelic beliefs once labeled as fringe. Other presenters at the conference included Terrence McKenna, Robert Anton Wilson and Timothy Leary.

Contributing to a countercultural movement and aesthetic that used technology like binaural audio generating “mind machines” tuned to subsonic frequencies like Schumann’s resonance (7.83hz) they experimented with using sound to align listeners with the planet’s global electromagnetic resonances.

Inspired by the Hindu belief “nada brahma” (that the universe is sound) C-lab’s artistic research goal is to find, lock-in and use the sonic carrier frequency of reality itself.

Specializing in creating listening experiences in chill out environments up & down the West coast of the United States, they performed in venues ranging from underground parties in undisclosed, map-point only locations to formal contexts like the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Summertime Classical Music Series and Reed college’s Black Lodge festival.

C-lab performances are expanded DJ sets that include both pre-recorded music and improvised layers using a variety of electro-acoustic sound sources and samples mixed live in a dub style.

Recent work (2026) fuses audio with live visuals producing a hybrid AV experience.
